A fusion of flavour...

It's such a good idea. Mixing local ingredients, grown and reared with care, with modern cooking styles and Indian spices, creating a whole new generation of food.

The Tiffin Club is small and beautifully formed and the food already very popular, so it is advisable to book.

The care and attention lavished on this restaurant is evident before you even tuck into the divine dishes.

For starters I would absolutely recommend the stuffed baby squid with a stuffing of prawns, chilli and coriander. Even if you think you don't like squid, be prepared to change your mind - this delicious morsel has nothing do with the battered elastic bands we are too familiar with.

Chilli crab cakes are another winner, and like the squid, are made a success by the very best ingredients and the talented chefs.

Broughton Water Buffalo Bhoona is an inspired creation - slow-cooked in a spicy sauce with black cardamon. Another speciality of the Tiffin Club, and one that is sure to win awards, is the Suraya Barramundi. Farmed in the New Forest the fish is flavoured with lemongrass, lime, chillies, honey and fresh ginger.

There is plenty here for anyone adverse to meat too, the vegetable dishes are grand enough to stand alone. The Brinjal, roasted aubergines in a salsa sauce was a velvety delight and the Mita Aloo, roast sweet potato in coconut milk and pistachio sauce was very moreish. While the asparagus with sesame made me realise there is so much one could do with vegetables, than simply steam broccoli!

The wine list is varied enough for all tastes and pockets, but of particular note are the house wines from Wickham Vineyard, once again showing their commitment to using our fabulous Hampshire produce.

And for all that care and attention, you think you'd would be paying a hefty price, but with starters between £3-£6 and main dishes from £8-£13, it proves that quality food doesn't cost the earth.

I was so taken with the food, and the inventive and considered way the flavours were put together, that I am desperate for them to bring out a cookery book, as this is the way I want to eat every day! JS Tiffin Club, 1 Oxford Street, Southampton.
