Bakers Arms in Droxford

The Bakers Arms, in the pretty village of Droxford, has already established itself as a family friendly pub that serves fine food.

Run by chef Adam Cordery and his fiancée Anna Thompson, who took over two years ago, it is the perfect country pub nestled in the middle of the Meon Valley, where locals enjoy congregating for a pint and a chat.

They also have the benefit of sampling some superb homemade food from locally sourced produce and meat, and even all the ales are local, supplied by the Bowman's brewery, just up the road, and the Triple F Brewery, based in Alton.

Now there is a new addition to the team in the guise of head chef Richard Harrison who joined two months ago. This extra pair of hands means that a specific lunch menu can be provided - lunch time mains cost £7.50 each, which is a perfectly reasonable price for what is on offer.

I had the roast Droxford pork sandwich with wholegrain mustard, apple sauce, salad and chips, while my dining companion had the Bakers Arms fish cake with spinach, horseradish cream and salad.

My sarnie was an excellent and filling comfort food feast with freshly cooked pork and homemade doorstep-sized bread.

The fish cake was at first glance a tempting light bite which turned out to be surprisingly filling - with a mix of white fish and salmon. The spinach and horseradish cream worked well together, balancing the flavours well.

If you are still feeling peckish after that lot, the homemade desserts on offer are equally good. I had a slice of the tarte tatin, a generous portion and the wonderfully plump apples came in a glaze that wasn't too sweet and the ice cream was deliciously intensely flavoured. My dining partner had the naughty, but very nice, chocolate fudge brownie with butterscotch ice cream - a wonderfully indulgent pud with chunks of butterscotch ice cream.

The Bakers Arms seems to be going from strength to strength and long may it continue as I can't recommend the food highly enough.

Fact file: our lunch came to around £27 including drinks. To book a table or find out more call 01489 877533 or visit: thebakersarmsdroxford.com
